GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A family partner is a person who has lived experience parenting a child experiencing mental, emotional, or behavioral health challenges and who can articulate the understanding of their experience with another parent or family member.  Family partner common tasks:

 
  • Conducting support groups.
  • Participating in wraparound services.
  • Giving one-on-one support.
  • Helping families navigate systems including juvenile justice, Child Protective Services, independent school districts, Social Security Administration, SNAP program, food banks, and other community resources.

Provides support, information, referral, follow-up, and technical assistance to families.  Requires participation in the Child and Family Wraparound team process in support of children and their families enrolled in the children’s mental health program.  Help families identify and acknowledge networks of support and provides them with the support and skills necessary to care for a child with mental health disorders.  The family partner will work with the family to move toward self-advocacy in the attainment of goals that will benefit their child as well as empower the family.  Serves as a liaison for family, staff, school, and community.  Responsible for keeping resources current as well as identifies resource problems.  Works variable hours to perform functions of the job.  This position requires community travel several times a week and a flexible work schedule to include some late hours and Saturday work.  Works under the direction of the Mental Health Services Director.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Requires a high school diploma or a GED.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience as a parent of a child in services with the local mental health authority, Camino Real Community Services, or other local mental health authorities.
  • Acceptable driving record.
  • Must secure certification as a certified family partner (CWP) within 1 year of hire date.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Bilingual skills - demonstrate ability to read, write and speak English and Spanish.
  • You must be able to use a personal vehicle for travel to provide job duties.
  • One (1) year of experience working with at risk youth.
  • Local resident of Dimmit/Zavala County.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Should possess or demonstrate the ability to acquire thorough understanding of all local, state, and federal health and human services programs with an emphasis on programs which serve children and adolescents with disabilities.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other parents, professionals, and individuals.
  • Ability to work courteously, effectively, and non-judgmentally with families of emotionally disturbed youth.
  • Knowledge of agencies and services for youth in the area, including county educational systems.
  • Willingness to travel and participate in educating and empowering parents and family members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under conditions requiring physical stamina and ability to work in a stressful environment.
